I’ll Have Another won’t run the Belmont Stakes
The dream of a Canadian-owned horse winning the Triple Crown with a Canadian-trained jockey aboard has come to a crashing end. I’ll Have Another, the star colt who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, has been scratched from the Belmont Stakes due to swelling in one of his front legs. His trainer, Doug O’Neill, delivered the news on a U.S. radio program, and the New York Racing Association has organized a 1 p.m. news conference. J. Paul Reddam of Windsor, Ont., the horse’s owner, will be there. The development will come as a huge disappointment to Canadian racing fans, along with the throngs of supporters who had shown up to Vancouver’s Hastings Park to cheer on jockey Mario Gutierrez during the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Gutierrez learned his trade at the Lower Mainland track, then caught a break one day when Reddam watched him, and liked the way he rode.
